How To Improve Your Grammar
Improving your grammar is really not that difficult, especially if you live in an English speaking country. As a matter of fact, examples of good grammar are everywhere. Here are a few examples:
Listen to or Watch the News
If you want to hear how English should be spoken, listen to or watch the News. Of course, the way words are pronounced may reflect regional preferences but the grammar used will be impeccable. After all, everything an anchorperson says, with exception of the “friendly banter” (and sometimes even that), is scripted by professionals who make
their living writing well-researched and grammatically correct copy.
Read the Newspaper
Newspapers have teams of editors checking the grammar and spelling of every article published. So, if you want to improve your grammar, and get the side benefit of being well informed, read a quality newspaper daily.
Listen to a Politician Give a Speech
For the most part, politicians use good grammar. Similar to anchorpersons, high-ranking politicians have professional speechwriters either completely write their speeches, or edit speeches they have written themselves, so you can be confident that the politician that is making full use of the teleprompter during his speech is using proper grammar.
Take a Course
These days, almost every college has continuing education courses for adults. Since you do not earn college credits from these courses, they are usually inexpensive. Check the course bulletin distributed by your local community college and see if there’s a course that will help you improve your grammar. They are usually short, interesting and a great
way to make new friends.
Listen to Someone Whose English you Admire
My friend Leslie is originally from London and speaks the most beautiful English I've ever heard. Her speaking voice is marvelously resonant, and she has that classic British accent that is musical to the ear. Of course as an American it would be rude to mimic her accent, but I can copy her grammatical style.
Improving Your Grammar Is Easy
As you can see from the examples I've listed above, improving your grammar is easy. Many of the suggestions I've given, like listening to the news, you may already do on a regular basis. It’s just a matter of paying closer attention to what’s being said grammatically, and copying what you've heard.
The ability to speak is a natural gift
that we humans enjoy, so it’s easy for any one of us to master the art of communication by using good grammar.
